Oxygen 2023-2024

Through our Oxygen programme for emerging South Asian Dance Artists, Pagrav Dance Company will support and enable a new generation of South Asian dancers to be aware of, explore, understand and improve their own practice. Oxygen will support professionals currently working in this space through residencies, shadowing and mentoring opportunities. Our goal is for Oxygen to inspire the 2023-24 cohort to expand their portfolio as performers, teachers and more importantly makers. 

Over a 7-month period, we will undertake a series of interventions that will embed this way of working across our organisation and the Oxygen cohort.

If you are an emerging South Asian dance artist, apply before 18 July! There are five places available on our Oxygen programme, which will include:

  • Residencies

    Immersive, personal residencies hosted by Urja Desai Thakore. Focussed on having the time, space and support whilst being immersed in dance.

  • Training and Shadowing

    Urja Desai Thakore will bring different aspects of Indian classical dance, participatory arts knowledge to the studio, giving guidance and supporting artistic curiosity. Shadowing opportunities through Pagrav Dance and other partners will enable artists to experience first-hand their career opportunities in relation to participatory arts.

  • Coaching and Mentoring

    Each person will recieve individually centred bespoke coaching. All coaching and mentoring will be delivered by Eva Martinez.

  • Honorarium

    Each of the participants will receive a £1000 honorarium.

We will select 5 artists through open call. Artists will be asked to fill in the online Expression of interest.

Oxygen will build on the existing work that Pagrav Dance Company already provides to individual artists and creatives. For the last six years we have informally supported South Asian creatives with discrete, sensitive and confidential support through ongoing mentoring and coaching. Oxygen enables PDC to both codify and structure this area of our work, as well as expand the offer to more South Asian creatives. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Have been creating performance work in a professional setting for a minimum of 3 years (occasionally less experienced artists are included)
  • Based in the UK
  • Have an idea for research or a piece
  • Are working with South Asian Dance at the core of their practice
  • Can demonstrate how Oxygen will benefit them as an artist
  • Are ambitious to challenge themselves, their peers and us

We Cannot Support

  • Undergraduates
  • Those based outside the UK
  • Artists with less than 3 years experience of making work
  • Travel costs

Selection Process

We are looking for emerging South Asian Artists with new choreographic ideas from any SA dance background.

This selection is carried out by:

We are looking for emerging South Asian Artist with all kinds of new choreographic ideas from any SA dance background.
